Four rescued from mud flats skipper found dead after boat capsizes off Derby

A land and sea search has recovered the body of a skipper missing after his boat capsized off Derby in WA’s north on Sunday afternoon.

WA Police said authorities were alerted the 6.4 metre Chivers sports cab vessel had overturned with five people on board around 1.45pm, shortly after the group departed from Derby jetty.

A search for the boat and its occupants â€" two men, a woman and two girls â€" was launched and at 5.40pm a helicopter found the capsized boat on the shoreline with footprints in the mud.

Around an hour later four of the passengers were found walking through marsh land.

They were uninjured but taken to Derby Hospital for observation.

The skipper of the boat, a man aged in his 50s, was found dead on Monday morning.

The group was travelling through Airport Creek, a tidal river approximately five kilometres south west of the Derby town site.

Derby Police coordinated the search with the assistance of local air and vessel resources as well as drones.
